![]() In November of 2002, the first phone with a camera was developed called the Sanyo SCP-5300. Alexander Wolcott’s 1800s camera obviously did not have this luxury. However, in modern day, many people can simply take pictures by pulling out their phone and clicking a single button or making one tap. ![]() When photographs could first be taken, not everyone had available access to the technology to take pictures at any given moment. When reflecting on the factors that attribute to the paradigm shift, one could distinctly comprehend that the revolution or improvements in technology most prominently contributed to the transformation of photography. Considering the factors involved in the change of the concept of photography, this shift may have inadvertently created social, mental, and even physical ramifications. This shift can be outlined by three main underlying causes: the change and advances in technology, cultural changes that have occurred, and societal pressures that influence the community. Because of the different motives that people have for taking pictures, photography has developed into a practice of people communicating to society or even to themselves, a certain lifestyle that they wish to have. Moreover, people sometimes take and share photos just to boast or portray an enhance lifestyle that they do not really live. In contrast, people in contemporary society, especially in younger generations, have started to use photos as an outlet to increase self-esteem or self-confidence by receiving “likes” on pictures. His intention was to create a device that would permit people to store a memory or event that could be preserved. In 1841, Alexander Wolcott invented the first camera that allowed users to capture an image and be reproduced on paper. According to Instagram, the company’s objective is to enable users to, “transform the image into a memory to keep around forever…and allow you to experience moments in your friends’ lives through pictures as they happen.” That student sitting behind me in Economics most likely did not possess the same intention as Instagram does. I’ve been slacking on my Instagram game.” A few weeks ago, sitting right behind me in Economics 102, a guy made this proposal to his friend who immediately agreed and supported his reasoning to take a photo. “We should take a picture together this weekend.
